In these assignments, we met with the authors of a few books we read in class and asked them all about their writing and the process of writing. We learned how these authors went through the process of writing and then how they edited their work. All three of these authors were different with all having different ways of writing and editing. I found that these author studies connected to this standard because we were collaborating with community members about how to teach writing in different ways. After hearing from the authors I then wrote reflections on different ways of how what the authors said could help me teach students writing. I found that this whole assignment is also something that could be done with any age student. This assignment really opened my eyes in many different ways of how to teach writing and different ideas for writing with students as well.
These author studies have improved my understanding of teaching writing in such a big way. I learned how real-life writers go through the process and how it can be different for everyone. Learning this, I now know so much about how students can struggle with writing but can find inspiration in so many different ways. I also learned that collaborating with authors will make the students excited to see all their questions answered. I have so many new ideas for these authors like writing down one thought, just a random thought a day, and then when students are stuck they can go back to those thoughts, or also teaching my students how writing detail can be like a mental movie, and so many more ideas I would have never thought about unless meeting with the authors. This assignment really helped me take more of that leadership role in teaching students how to write since now I have a better understanding of the process, and how the teacher needs to be the leader in helping the student write.
