Quick Write #4

Q: Social Media During the pandemic Good, bad or evil- where do you stand

The last few months, or years or so have been the hardest that any of us have ever been through. We were put on a national lockdown, restaurants and other businesses were closed, only essential workers were able to go and work. There was no school, everything was put onto technology. For this period of time only, I think it was a good time to have social media. We were being kept informed of what is going on around us, we were staying in contact with school and friends and family. Social media was the only way we were able to communicate with others besides the people we lived with. This pandemic has taken a huge toll on everyone but I do believe that if we didn’t have social media, it would have been a lot harder. Any other time in my life I would have agreed that social media has been a bad influence because kids are not outside more, they are relying on the tablets and technology for fun but if we didn’t have those things for this pandemic I don’t know how we would have stayed in school. Social media normally gets a bad rep when it comes to giving the public knowledge but during this pandemic, people really relayed on social media to be able to let us know what is going on in the world. We have never been through something like this and only those that were in the middle of it were able to report on it. I remember when this all started both my parents were working tons and tons of hours because of health care, and normally I would rely on them for giving me information, but my brother and I had to rely on social media to see what was happening and how to get prepared. My freshman year when we first got sent home for the rest of the semester, I remember seeing all those big-name schools and larger population schools being set home first, so we were all more prepared for the announcement than if we didn’t have social media.
